As a child, I was driven to create, transforming my living experience into art, drawings, skits, and games of make-believe. As I matured, I dove deeper, designing my first website at thirteen, enrolling in graphic design and photography classes, and performing in poetry open mics.
However, fearing the risks of a creative career, I sought security instead, enlisting in the Army as a military paralegal at age seventeen. The military taught me to be self-reliant and that I could do what I previously thought I couldn't. It pushed me to keep chasing more money or better working conditions. After exploring several roles, I eventually landed a banker position at Citizens Bank. Initially, I thought, "I made it!" I had found a stable career. But as day after day dragged on, I quickly grew bitter and disinterested.
In 2019, I took a leap of faith. I quit my job at the bank and took a few weeks to visit my homeland, Puerto Rico. I remember feeling lost, and though easier to bear beach side on a tropical island, I was for the first time in my adult life unemployed and with no idea where I would go next. Walking along the sea as the water gently brushed over my feet, I decided I would find a job that allowed me the time to focus on those passions I once held dear. Even if it took me a lifetime, I would somehow make something beautiful out of it—not just a career, but a life's work, a calling if you will.
I returned to the States, and through the absolute turmoil that was 2019 to 2020, I got a part-time job and began rediscovering myself. I began taking on small creative jobs for friends, the company I worked for, and anywhere else I could find them. With each new project, I became more confident in my skills. The journey at first felt terribly slow, but now, closing in on five years, I can honestly say I feel the momentum.
I've worked with several clients on a variety of different projects. I've designed product lines from concept all the way to manufacturing and marketing. I've learned to show the world what I see through the lens of a camera, having my photography published in magazines and filming a music video with people even more talented and passionate than me. Taking a moment to look back, I can't help but feel prideful and determined to create so much more.
